Woodsy, piney. My dream.

I grew up in the woods. From dawn to dusk, life was one long adventure — Capture the Flag, Kick the Can, football in the fall, sandlot baseball in the summer, playing army, sledding down the hill in our backyard. In winter, I’d sit by the stream pretending I was camping. My brother and I caught frogs in the culvert out front. Down the road was an orchard and grapevine where we’d sneak apples and eat grapes straight from the vine — until the old man chased us off. And at the very end of the road? A cave system just begging to be explored. It was an enchanted childhood, one that gave me my lifelong love of the outdoors and the woods. A place where you could get happily lost.
The North Cascades feel like a place you could get happily lost. It’s one of those parks best discovered on foot, off the beaten path. We explored what we could, and what we saw was incredible.

In the next photos you’ll notice the smoke from nearby wildfires. The fires which we have seen the smoke from have been caused by lightning. They are hard to contain because of the terrain. Firefighters simply cannot get to them.

My technology luck is following the same path as the wildfires, struck out of nowhere and difficult to contain! So far: my Apple Watch is toast, my right hearing aid is kaput, my laptop is in purgatory, my CPAP went on strike for a while (though I managed to patch it together), and now my iPhone is overheating. What’s next? Honestly, I don’t even want to guess.
I’ve set up a Stripe account below if anyone would like to contribute. I’m currently borrowing a laptop just to get by.
In the meantime, enjoy the photos of the North Cascades!

Next up: Olympic National Park… and a surprise visitor!
