Visits with Friends Close to My Heart

Tara’s Reunion in the Rockies

The Colorado sun was just beginning to dip behind the peaks, painting the sky in streaks of lavender and gold. I found myself smiling, heart racing with anticipation. It had been years since I’d last seen Kathi—my friend since 6th grade, the one whose laughter echoed through my most cherished childhood memories.

When I spotted her across the parking lot, time seemed to fold in on itself. Kathi’s smile was exactly as I remembered: warm, genuine, and a little mischievous. She hurried toward me, and we embraced fiercely, words tumbling out.

Over dinner and the gentle hum of mountain life outside, we shared stories and the winding paths of our lives. It’s a long way from 6th grade to being in our 60’s! We talked about life, love, children, grandchildren, and the threat of escapades in our youth that I wouldn’t let her tell Julie about!

As evening settled around us, I realized how much Kathi meant to me. Through every stage of my life, even when we were miles apart, she’d been a constant. Sitting across from her, I felt profoundly grateful to hold her so close to my heart. Our friendship is a rare and precious gift, one that I would always cherish.

Glo and Jim Davidson

We met up with Glo at a nearby brewery, sharing a meal and some great conversation. I’ve known Glo and her family for many years. She was a year ahead of me in school, her sister was in my class, and her brother Danny was my brother Dave’s best friend. Our brothers are both gone now, and that loss has bonded us in a way words can’t quite capture.

Over the years, we’ve stayed in touch through social media and class reunions. Glo has an incredibly successful career in healthcare. She is married to the well-known adventurer, mountaineer, and author Jim Davidson. He even signed two of his books for me—such a treat! Jim is a survivor of the devastating 2015 Mount Everest earthquake, a story as inspiring as it is humbling.

It was wonderful catching up with Glo and hearing her family news. She looked fabulous—still the same kind, funny, and loving person I’ve always known. I’m lucky to have her in my life.

One of the unexpected joys of this journey has been reconnecting with people from my past. In the weeks ahead, I hope to see my cousin and we’ll be staying with Julie’s cousin in Arizona. Who knows who else we might cross paths with along the way?
